|John Gumbleden was born in Hampshire in about 1599 (exact details unknown). He entered Broadgate's Hall, Oxford, in 1616, aged 18 years, and became a student of Christ Church soon after. After graduating, he preached at Longworth in Berkshire several years, and was admitted to the reading of the sentences in 1632. During the Civil Wars, he took the Parliamentary side and was made chaplain to Robert earl of Leicester. Later, he was Rector of Llanilid, als. St. Juliet, Glamorgan (1639), then Rector of Coytie in Glamorganshire (1645). |
He published several sermons.
In 1632, he married Florence, widow of Edward Gamage of Newcastle, co. Glamorgan. His will, proved in 1657, mentions no children or other relatives.
He died in September or October, in 1657. A memorial inscription in Coytie church (which certainly still existed in the late 19th century) stated "Here lyeth the Body of John Gumbleden, Bachelor in Divinitie, Late Minister of Christ in this Parish."
