|James Gumbleton was a son of James Lambert Gumbleton and his wife Mary Ann, nee Bayly. He was baptised in Southwark, Surrey, on 21 Apr 1806.
In 1826 he was recruited by the Revenue Service, initially working in Scotland. The Revenue Service normally placed its employees away from their home areas and moved them around the country from time to time to avoid their building up local friendships which could lead to corruption.
In 1851, he was in the household of a farmer in Lifton, Tavistock, Devon. It is not known whether he was lodging there or just a very short-term visitor.
By 1861, he had retired from the Revenue Service and was lodging with a farmer in St Stephen, Launceston, Cornwall. He was still lodging with the same family in 1871 and 1881.
In 1881, he died and was buried in St Stephen’s Lanceston.
He never married or had children.
