|Benjamin Gumbleton was a son of William Gumbleton and his wife Elizabeth, nee Swinnerton. He was born on 9 Sep 1799 and baptised on 23 Sep 1806 in Islington, Middlesex.
He trained as a silversmith and in 1833 he was admitted to the Worshipful Company of Clothworkers by patrimony (his father had been a member). This gave him the freedom of the City of London although he was not a clothworker by trade.
In 1838 he married Theodosia Young Carter at St Luke’s, Old Street.
In 1841, they were living in Ironmonger Street, Finsbury, St Luke, London. By this time they had one child. Their second son was born the same year.
In 1842, his wife, Theodosia, died tragically after accidentally drinking poison.
His younger son died in 1843 but, in 1851, Benjamin was still living in Ironmonger Street, with his elder son and Mary Haskell, a visitor.
He died in 1860 21 Bedford Place, Brighton, Sussex, though he was buried back in the City of London. His will named his son Benjamin William as his executor.
