Percy James Gumbleton was a son of Walter Edgar Gumbleton and his first wife, Ellen Triggs. He was born in 1908 in the Richmond, Surrey, Registration District and was baptised on 14 April of that year in Barnes, Surrey.

In 1911 he was living with his parents and siblings at 7, Avondale Rd, Mortlake, Surrey, and his father was a Metropolitan Police Constable.

In 1935 he married Ethel E Douch in the Sturminster, Dorset, Registration District. They had one daughter.

He joined the Merchant Navy and served in the Falklands in World War II.

In 1957, he died aged 49 in London as a vagrant. His widow died in 1988.
