Nellie was born November 11, 1944, in Columbus, Mississippi, the daughter of Zelp and Rosie (Mack) Gambleton.
For 13 years she was a foster care provider with Lutheran Social Services. She was also an established cook, working at the Columbus Air Force Base and the Country Kitchen in Davenport from where she retired.
She enjoyed spending quality time with her grandchildren and family.
Nellie was known by many as "Mama Shag," for her kindness, open home and famous cooking. She enjoyed cooking for all her family and friends.
Mama Shag was a very inspiring role model for man. She was the head of her family and cared for everyone. In her free time she enjoyed fishing and playing cards.
Survivors include five sons, James (Sharon) Gambleton, Davenport, Russell Gambleton, Gary, Ind., and Alton Gambleton, Tyrone Gambleton, and Michael (Danyiel) Gambleton, all of Davenport; three grandsons, and her first and only granddaughter, Tatiyana Marie; and three brothers, John (Bertha) Gambleton, Columbus, Miss., Silas (Mary) Gambleton, Delmar, Iowa, and Zelp (Carolyn) Gambleton, Columbus, Miss. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Sam Frank Gambleton.
