| Arthur Herbert Gumbleton was a son of Leonard George Gumbleton and his wife Edith Marrian, nee Hunt. He was born on 30 Jan 1916 in the West Ham, Middlesex, Registration District.
He was a leading aircraftman in WWII (dogtag 538552) in the 48th sqdn (attached to the Royal Air Force) of the RAF. On 20 May 1940 he was involved in the Dutch Patrol operation, flying in an Avro Anson I plane, serial number K8772, OY-G. The crew consisted of Flight Lieutenant [Pilot] Stephen Dodds, RAF 37086, 48 Sqdn., age 24, Mentioned in Despatches; Pilot Officer Bryan S. Booth, RAF 42045, 48 Sqdn., age 27; Leading Aircraftman Arthur H. Gumbleton, RAF 538552, 48 Sqdn., age 24; and Leading Aircraftman Norman E. Jacobs, RAF 526265, 48 Sqdn., age 22. They took off at 17.10 hrs from Detling, in company with two other Ansons to attack nine German Motor Torpedo Boats (MTB's) in position CPOX 2706. At 19.00 hrs 35 km SW of Texerl, they sighted eight or nine MTB's in convoy and attacked. F/Lt Dodds led the attack and was hit by flak from an E-boat in the starboard wing and was forced to ditch. All the crew were missing, presumed dead. All crew members are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, Panel 23. Arthur Gumbleton died unmarried. | ||
