We, Patrick N McWilliams, James J Martin and Patrick Blake of the City of Detroit, Wayne, Michigan
bound and obliged unto Albert N Wilkinson Esq, Judge of Probate [...] in the sum of $5000 [...] to be paid unto Albert H Wilkinson [....]
Dated 8 April 1874
Whereas Patrick H McWilliams has been appointed [...] Administrator of the estate of Thomas Gumbleton [....]
To the Hon. Albert N Wilkinson
Probate Judge of the County of Wayne, Michigan
The petition of Ann Gumbleton of the City of Detroit in said County of Wayne respectfully shows:
That your petitioner is the widow of Thomas Gumbleton deceased who was accidentally killed by cars of the Michigan Central Railroad Company on the thirtieth day of January 1874.
That said Thomas Gumbleton deceased died intestate and left a family consisting of your petitioner and four minor children and left besides three adult children surviving him by a former marriage.
That said Thomas Gumbleton deceased was killed under such circumstances as to give, as your petitioner is advised by her counsel, a valid claim to his personal representatives for the damage suffered by reason of such accidental killing.
That Patrick H McWilliams a resident of this city and county is in every way a fit and proper person to act as Administrator of the estate of the said Thomas Gumbleton deceased.
Therefore your petitioner prays that Letters of Administration in the estate of said Thomas Gumbleton deceased may be granted to said Patrick H McWilliams as provided by law.
And your petitioner will ever pray etc.
[Signed] Ann X Gumbleton (her mark)

The petition of Mrs Ann Gumbleton of the City of Detroit respectfully shows:
That her husband Thomas Gumbleton departed this life 30th January 1874 and Patrick McWilliams has been appointed Administrator. That she has four children, two of whom are wholly and one of whom is partially dependent for means of support on your petitioner. That she has no means of support except her own labor and the charity of her friends. That said estate is worth somewhere about $2000 consisting wholly of money as your Petitioner believes and she asks such reasonable allowance may be made out of said personal estate for the maintenance of herself and children as to the Court may seem just. That such allowance may date from the time of the decease of her said husband and continue during the progress of the settlement of the estate.
And your petitiooner will ever pray.
Signed: Ann X Gumbleton (her mark)
