Ann Clarke was the wife of Samuel Gumbleton, married 18 May 1771 at Donhead St Mary, Wiltshire.
In 1788 she left her husband and, the next year, he placed an eadvert in a local newspaper seeking her return. This included the following description:
She is a short fat woman, and has lived as a cook in several Gentlemen's families, and may be apprehended by having a recommendation from William Whitacre, Esq. of Motcombe, near Shaftesbury, Dorset, or from A.B. Bennet, Esq. of Donhead St Mary. She is upwards of 50 years of age, of a brown complexion, dark hair, and grey eyes, had on a plain country dress when she eloped.She may have returned to her husband because when she eventually died, in 1803, she was buried in Donhead St Mary. | ||
