| William Gumbleton was born in 1851 and baptised on the 5th December 1852 at West Grimstead, Wiltshire. He was the son of John Gumbleton and his wife Mary Ann, nee Sims.
By the age of 18, William had signed up as a Merchant Seaman. In the 1861 census, he was on board the Britannia in Portsmouth Harbour. A William Gumbleton died in Alverstoke, Hampshire, in 1861. It seems likely that this was the same William Gumbleton. | ||
