| John Gumbleton’s origins are something of a mystery. He was born in about 1808 and, in the later censuses, he gives his place of birth as county Galway, Ireland, although it seems unlikely that a native Irish family would have moved to the village of West Grimstead, Wiltshire, unless they had an existing connection to the place. Also the name of Gumbleton was very much associated with West Grimstead prior to his arrival. His mother, Mary, was Irish.
In 1838, he married Mary Ann Sims at West Grimstead. They went on to have five children. In the 1841 census, John was staying with the Hayter family in Whiteparish, Wiltshire and was a police constable. His wife was living with John’s mother, Mary, in West Grimstead. In 1847, John was mentioned as “the Downton superintendant of police” in the trial of a poaching case. In 1851, John was again away from home, lodging with a family in Bishopstoke, Hampshire, and was now a railway porter. In 1860, John’s son, Solomon, was married and noted his father’s occupation as “bailiff”, but, in 1861, John and Mary Ann were living in Clarendon Rd, Alderbury and he was a woodman. Mary Ann died in 1868 and was buried at Alderbury. Later that year, John married Frances Pope. The 1871 census shows John (still a woodman) and Frances living in Clarendon Road, Alderbury. John died in 1872 and was buried at Alderbury. His will, proved the same year, describes him as a “Land Steward’s Assistant”. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
