|Henry GUMBLETON, son of Josiah William Dornford GUMBLETON and Lydia Gumbleton, was born on 7 Mar 1842 at Ibstock, Leicestershire and baptised on 13 Apr 1842 at Ibstock.|
In 1851 he was living with his parents at 4 Tiverton Street, Newington, Surrey.
In 1861, he was a lodger in Poplar (in the house of a shipwright) and was listed as a shoe salesman.
He set up in business with his brother, John Thomas GUMBLETON, and the 1869 directory for Cambridge has “Gumbleton Brothers, boot & shoe makers, Cambridge”.
On 1 Jan 1870, the Cambridge Independent newspaper printed a notice for J & H Gumbleton's shop, Cambridge. There were several rather fanciful advertisements for the shop in various local publications, for example extolling the virtues of Gumbletons' in doggerel verse. It is tempting to think of Henry as the "marketing man" who was responsible for these, while his brother John made the boots, but there is no real evidence to support this, other than that John never adopted the same advertising after his brother's death.
In the 1871 census Henry GUMBLETON was living in 4 Market St, Cambs, with his married brother.
On 29 Mar 1872 he was drowned, aged 30, in a boating accident at at Bottisham Locks, Waterbeach, Cambridge. An inquest was held and the jury returned a verdict of 'accidental drowning'.
He was buried in 1 Apr 1872 at Holy Trinity Church, Cambridge. In this era, Holy Trinity burials took place at Mill Road Cemetery, Cambridge. His gravestone still survives but is broken.
