Major Charles Gumbleton had a lengthy obituary in War Cry.

He apparently made an unpromising start in the Salvation Army and suffered from a speech impediment. However, he believed that God would make him ready for His work and Charles went into a wood to pray, emerging some hours later, freed of his disability, which never returned.

After moving to Weston-Super-Mare he was accepted as an officer in the Salvation Army and trained under 'Miss Eva' Booth.

He received his first appointment in 1896, to Hednesford. Subsequent campaigns took him to Birmingham, South Yorks, Notts and Derby.

After his marriage in 1909 he held further appointments in Sheffield, Kirkaldy and Swansea.

Later he was appointed to the Welsh National Headquarters of the Salvation Army, as a 'spiritual special'.

He died whilst on a campaign in Ballymena, Ireland.

His funeral was held at Ballymena and a remembrance service conducted in the Belfast I Citadel. A further Funeral and memorial service were held in Cardiff.
