| Benjamin Gumbleton was a son of Morgan Gumbleton and his wife Mary, nee Hazell. Benjamin was born in 1874 in the Alderbury district in WIltshire.
Later in the 1870s, the family moved to Llanllechid, Caernarvonshire, Wales, where Morgan worked as a gamekeeper. The family (including Benjamin) were in Tu Gwyn, Llanllechid in the 1881 census. By 1891 he was aged 17 and had left school to work as a slate quarry labourer. By 1901, he had moved to Ashton in Makerfield, Lancashire, where he was working as a miner, below ground. Ashton-in-Makerfield was part of the St. Helens Area of the South Lancashire Coalfield. The St Helens Area lay to the South West of the Wigan area and occupied around 60 square miles, skirting Wigan, Warrington, Widnes and to within eight miles of Liverpool. In about 1903, he left Britain and emigrated to Australia, where he continued to work as a miner. He married Eva Nelson in Hamilton, New South Wales in 1906. At the time the 'wedding' picture was taken, Benjamin and Eva were already married almost two years & Eva was expecting their eldest child, Hazel. They dressed up in their wedding clothes, drove in a sulky (horse & cart) to Weston not far from Kurri Kurri to have a studio photo taken so they could send it back to his relatives in England. When they arrived at the studio, they had no flowers, so the photographer found some for her. Benjamin and Eva had four children. He died at Kurri Kurri, NSW, on 21 April 1923. His widow died in 1945. Thanks to Lynda Neasbey for the information | ||||||||||||||||||
