|Alfred Ernest Gumbleton was a son of Alfred Gumbleton and Alice Maria (nee Wells), born in 1888 in the St Olave registration district of South London. In 1891, their address was given as 22 Layard Rd, Bermondsey.
He was admitted to Lucas Street School, Lewisham, in 1891.
In 1901, he was living with his parents at 18 Benbold Place, Greenwich, Kent.
He joined the Post Office, as an assistant, in 1905 and was promoted to a postman (1908), postman II (1909) and sorter (1910).
In 1911, he was living with his widowed mother at 21 Fernbrook Rd, Lewisham.
On 26 Oct 1916, during World War I, he enlisted as a seaman. He served initially at 'HMS Pembroke' (the name given to the shore garrison at Chatham), then on HMS Gibraltar and HMS Cyclops. Cyclops served during the First World War as a repair ship with the Grand Fleet where she served the whole of the War at Scapa Flow. He was demobilised on 25 February 1919.
He married Winifred Emma Bell in Carlisle, in 1919. They had 3 children
In 1966, he was the executor of the will of his uncle, Victor Leonard Gumbleton.
He died in Greenwich in 1979.
