|James GAMBLETON was a son of James GUMBLETON and Ann LENEHIN. He was born in 1871 in West Ham registration district, Middlesex. A few months later, in the 1871 census, the family are shown living at 103 Butler Street?, West Ham, and James, senior, was a labourer.
James, the father, died in 1872, by which time the family seem to have moved to the Medway area.
In 1881, James (the younger) and his siblings were living with their widowed mother at 5 Katherine Place, Poplar, Middlesex.
In 1893, James was married to Ellen MURPHY, in the Poplar district. In the 1901 census they were living with two children at 190 Folkestone Gdns, Deptford, Kent. James was described as "shield driver tunnel" perhaps working on the building of the London Underground?
Ellen (nee Murphy) died in 1903. By 1911, James and his remaining family (plus his widowed mother) were living at 9, Tyas Road, Canning Town, West Ham, Essex. James was a boiler scaler.
James Gambleton died 1 May 1938, in the Romford registration district. His probate gives his address as 27 Green-lane Ilford Essex. The beneficiary of the will was Marguerite Agnes Annie Gambleton, widow. This might have been his mother, Ann.
