| Bertie James Gumbleton was a son of Charles Gumbleton of Shaftesbury, Dorset, and his wife, Alice Maud, nee Case. He was born on 16 Jun 1905 in Shaftesbury.
In 1908 the family were living at 3, Laundry Lane, Shaftesbury, but by the 1911 census, they were at 92 St James Street, and Charles Gumbleton, the father, was a bailiff's assistant. The electoral register of 1927 shows Bertie James living at 78, St James St and his father at number 92. Also that year, he married Lydia Brickell at Shaftesbury. They went on to have one daughter. By 1929, the Electoral Registers show Bertie James Living at Porten, High Street, Poole, Dorset; by the following year his address was Cann Common, Cann, Dorset. Bertie James Gumbleton died, aged 40, in 1945 and was buried at St James' Church, Shaftesbury. A newspaper report of the funeral says he was of Elm Hill, Motcombe and for 19 years was employed at Eastman's, Gillingham and Shaftesbury branches. Eastman's was a well-known local firm of butchers. | ||
