| Henry Aloysius Gumbleton was born in New York on the 14th September, 1846. A baptism for Henry Gumbleton has been found at the Basilica of St Patrick Old Cathedral, Manhattan, New York, United States, in 1846 [source: Findmypast] but the details are not known and it has not been proved that this is the present individual.
He was educated at Ward School No 21, under the principalship of John Boyle, and entered the Free Academy (later renamed the the College of the City of New York), graduating in the summer of 1863. In 1865, County Clerk W. C. Conner appointed him as his private secretary. On 15 Apr 1866, Conner advanced him to the office of Assistant Deputy, which office he held under Conner's successor, Charles E. Loew who, on the first of January, 1870, made him the Deputy Clerk of the City and County of New York. He was a member of Tammany Hall, certainly by the 1870s: this being the Democratic Party political machine that played a major role in controlling New York City and New York State politics and helping immigrants, most notably the Irish, rise in American politics. Gumbleton was a member of the General Committee, and a representative in the Committee on Organization from the Fifth Assembly District; He was appointed as Clerk of the City and County of New York but was dismissed from that role in March 1879, accused of financial improprieties. A marriage has been found for Henry Aloysius Gumbleton in 1900, at St Jerome, The Bronx, New York [source Findmypast] but the details have not yet been checked]. He died on 24 May 1914. | ||
