| William was a child emigrant to Canada, 24 Mar 1904, as a Bernardo boy when he was 15, along with his younger sister, Emily, who was 12. William worked on a farm in Unionville, Ontario, a town east of Toronto,
Ontario. In World War I,he joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force and served in France.
William died 6 Dec. 1970 and is buried at Spring Creek Cemetery, 1390 Clarkson Rd, Mississauga, ON, L5J 2W5 along with his wife, Bertha May nee Barker. The year before William died, he told another relative that he had been married as a young man, to a Lusie Ryan, in Toronto, Ontario, and whom he had turned Catholic to marry. When William signed up on 15 April 1915 at age 26 years 9 months to join the Canada Expeditionary Forces to go overseas to France during WW1 (although he named his sister as his next of kin in his attestation papers), Lusie went out west to Alberta, a province in western Canada, to work as a nurse. When William returned home to Canada, he also went out to Alberta, looking for her and hoping to make a go of their marriage, and, if not, then to secure an annullment. While out west, he did find Lusie, realized their marriage was over, and soon after, met and married Bertha May Barker from Alberta. Family of William Thomas Gumbleton:
