|Mary Gumbleton, a daughter of Robert GUMBLETON and Ann (nee Ensor), was born 25 Jun 1803 and baptised 31 Jul 1803 in Ilchester, Somerset. The family left Ilchester and moved to Deal, Kent, in about 1806.
The 1823 and 1826 Kent Directories list a Miss Gumbleton, straw hat manufacturer, Deal, St Leonard, Kent. By 1832 she had moved to Hampstead and is listed in the Middlesex directory as “Mary Gumbleton, Milliner & dressmaker, Hampstead, Middlesex”. She appears in the 1841 census in Heath street, Hampstead and the 1846 directory lists Mary & Elizabeth Gumbleton, Milliners & Dressmakers, Hampstead, Middlesex.
On 24 Aug 1854, she was married to William THOROGOOD at the Ebenezer Chapel, Camden Town. He was a widower, aged 52; the son of Charles THOROGOOD, gentleman. At the time. He was living at 113 Stanhope St, Camden Town.
Mary THOROGOOD, nee Gumbleton, died on 18 Jan 1860 and is buried in Highgate cemetery.
William THOROGOOD was a widower at 26 Grafton Rd, Marylebone, in 1861, and died in 1880.
