John James Gumbleton was born on 7 May 1845 in St George in the East, London. He was a son of John Gumbleton ( a corn dealer and warehouseman) and his wife Eliza (nee Dunford).
In 1851, they were living at 29 Holywell Lane, Shoreditch, where John (senior) was a corn dealer. The family were still living in Shoreditch in 1861 and the father was by then a "Rush mat maker". On 7 May 1863, John James volunteered for service in the Royal Navy. The period of his service is not known, but in the 1871 census he was listed as an able seaman on board a ship (unnamed), docked in Hampshire. He has not been found in the 1881 census but may have been overseas with the RN. On 26 Jul 1885 he married Elizabeth Emma GOODSALL. He was described as a sailor and his address was given as Dilsher[?] Grove, Southwark Park Rd, Bermondsey. By 1881, he had left the Navy and was working as a caretaker at the College of Preceptors, 2-3 Bloomsbury Sq, London, where he, his wife and three-year-old daughter also lived. The College of Preceptors was the first professional body for teachers, founded in 1846. He has not been found in the 1901 census but in 1906 his wife ELizabeth died in the St Olave district of south London. By 1911 John James was an inmate in the Royal Alfred Institution for aged seamen, at Belvedere House, Erith, Kent. He died there in 1914 and was buried in Brook St Cemetery, Erith. |
